About this Role:

We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Engineer to join an established civil engineering contractor whom specialise in groundworks, infrastructure and highways. Due to increased work load and recent successful tenders they are looking to expand the team. In particular to work on a large infrastructure project in the value of £12m in Sussex. 

They are seeking a Senior Engineer to supervise and guide the engineers on site on a section of the project and report back to the Site Agent and Project Manager. The aim of the project is to alleviate traffic congestion, increase safety and control pollution levels in the area.

The project will be delivered under an NEC contract – ideally you will have experience of working with the contract and self-delivering projects from inception to completion. The specific works including: construction of 1km highway; pedestrian and cyclist facilities; viaduct (rail crossing); culvert; balancing pond and new junctions with associated street furniture.

Reporting to the Site Agent and visiting Project Manager, your site team will consist of two General Foreman and a cluster of Site Engineer’s which you will be responsible for, and direct labour force.

This role may be suitable for a Senior Engineer who already has experience managing other engineers.


Manage and develop junior members of the setting out team

Assist the Project Manager / Site Agents with site records, risk assessments, method statements and permits as appropriate

Communicate setting out control and provide information to assist with the construction of works

Record ‘as built’ information for Health & Safety File

Ensure setting out equipment is properly maintained and calibrated

Carry out pre-start OGL surveys with Survey Department

Skills and Ability

Applicants will have a proven record of setting out on civil engineering projects including earthworks, deep drainage, highways and infrastructure and be capable of producing As-Built drawings of such.

Applicants should hold a CSCS card and have at least 2 years site experience with a Civil Engineering Contractor.

Excellent communications skills are essential, as is the ability to work under their own initiative.

Applicants will be conversant with all surveying instruments, co-ordinate setting out and be able to work confidently with Autodesk Auto-Cad.

SMSTS and First Aid will be an advantage but not essential.

A full clean driving licence is essential.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a desire to manage and develop junior members of the setting out team.

Requirements including certificates and qualifications:

Ideally you will hold minimum of HNC/HND Civil Engineering qualification with experience of self-delivering civil engineering projects.

You will also hold valid SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid and further related construction certificates.
