About this Role:

We are looking to recruit an experienced Design Manager to join a principle contractor in civil engineering, whom specialise in highways, water, rail and aviation. Due to increased work load and recent successful tenders they are looking to expand the team; in particular to work on a large £80m highway project in the south west in collaboration with Highways England. It is high priority that the Design Manager is passionate about saving time on the programme and challenging design proposals to save cost.

The project includes 3.5 mile road, upgrading and expanding of the existing single carriageway to a dual carriageway, three new junctions, two new structures and significant heavy earthworks.

The original site comprises a mix of dual and single lane carriageway, which leads to localised congestion, impacting adversely on journey times and reliability. This section also has a poor accident record as a result of poor junction alignment and visibility, and changes in road type. The scheme will reduce congestion, improve journey times and make our network safer for customers.

Ideally you will come from a site based background and will have chartership within design. You will have experience in working on larger projects, in excess of £10-£15m with an earthworks and/or structures bias.

Duties are but not limited to:

Appreciate target cost allowances and ensure designs are within the budget, liaising with commercial team to seek advice. All residual CDM risks to be clearly identified on the drawings and communicated to the team

Understand professional services agreement with the designer and support commercial team as appropriate, especially with design changes

Identify the design approvals required and ensure information flow to the client, GT Team and subcontractors.

Contribute to value engineering and buildability of the project by developing innovative design solutions which will add value to projects and provide competitive advantage.

Raising design related Request for Information (RFI’s) and Technical Queries (TQ’s).

Ensure designs are produce in a timely manner to meet programme requirements.

Monitor design process and provide update to the project manager.

Ensure designs are complete including drawings, specifications and schedules.

Liaise with the site team to provide buildability input.

Establish temporary works (TW) requirements and liaise with site team to produce TW design briefs.

Requirements including certificates and qualifications:

Ideally you will hold minimum of HNC/HND Civil Engineering qualification with experience of self-delivering civil engineering projects.

You will also hold valid SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid and further related construction certifcates.
