How to Answer Interview Questions:
It is always advisable to plan and go through some question and answers to ensure that your answering techniques are good and you incorporate everything into your answers.
Below are some of the more common questions that interviewers frequently ask, including some suggestions to help you plan your answers before an interview.
Questions – Tell me about yourself
Answer – Remember your answer should contain more about your skills and knowledge rather than your personal life. Talk about your career to date, your experiences with previous employers, what motivates you and why you enjoy construction eg I started as a (tradesman, engineer, quantity surveyor) which gives me the increased knowledge and experiences to ………….. spot possible issues, save money, save time etc.
Question – What are your strengths?
Answer – be prepared to give examples or demonstrate what your strengths are. Talk about your ability to plan, manage, execute, prevent issues, make money, work well under pressure, achieve deadlines, give examples.
Question – What have your achievements been in your career to date?
Answer – Select achievements that are work related and as recent as possible. Some examples could be, achieved …… percent over target profit by ………, achieved practical completion 3 weeks early on ……… project by doing …………
Question – What are your weaknesses?
Answer – A common mistake is to say you have none – this will only lead to more questioning and can come across as arrogant. Try to only mention a “good” weakness that can also be seen as strength, for example “I have difficulty working with people who do not pull their weight; I have high work standards and I expect others to have equally high standards.
Questions – Why are you looking for a new position?
Answer – Explain that you are looking for a new challenge, larger projects, change of location, better career prospects or a change of environment. This is not your opportunity to say something bad about your former employer, you must remain positive about them during questioning and if you can not say anything positive it is better not to say anything at all.
